DEFINITION/BOTANICAL ORIGIN: The volatile oil obtained by steam distillation of the Mentha arvensis
L.(Fam. Labiatae), followed by (partial) dementholisation by refrigeration (and, sometimes, fractional
distillation) to produce a stable non-crystallising oil at normal temperatures.

INHALATION: Remove from exposure site to fresh air. Keep at rest. Obtain medical

flush with plenty of water. If irritation persists, seek medical advice.

REACTIVITY: It presents no significant reactivity hazards, by itself or in contact with
water. Avoid contact with strong acids, alkali or oxidising agents.
DECOMPOSITION: Liable to cause smoke & acrid fumes during combustion: carbon
monoxide, carbon dioxide & other non-identified organic compounds
may be formed.
11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION.
Opdyke (1975) found Cornmint oil to be non-irritant, non-sensitising and non-phototoxic (see FCT, 13,
771 Special Issue II (Binder p258). LD50 acute oral: 1.24g/Kg. Cornmint oil is, however, thought to be
more toxic than oil from Mentha piperita, from the higher pulegone content.
